The route back to the dugout for former Cardinals manager Mike Matheny could stay in Missouri and remain close to home, but it first will include a swing through player development.
He had a winning record in every season in St. Louis and led the Cardinals to the 2013 World Series, where they lost to the Red Sox in six games.
Matheny, who has called St. Louis home for decades, had 2 ½ seasons remaining on his contract when he was fired, and the Cardinals are responsible for that salary beyond what he earns with the Royals.
"I'm excited about the opportunity to join the Royals in this capacity," Matheny said in a statement.
Mike has contributed so much to our game as both a player and a manager and has a wealth of knowledge that can only make us better.
The Royals hired ex-Cardinals manager Mike Matheny as a special advisor. Will he be the successor to current manager Ned Yost?
The Kansas City Royals announced Friday the hiring of Matheny as a special adviser for player development.
Before becoming the Cardinals’ manager for the 2012 season, Matheny worked as a special assignments official for the Cardinals and spent time during spring training and the season working with the organization’s young catchers.
This is a great chance for me to contribute in a variety of areas that will include player development and scouting.
The hiring of Matheny, 48, immediately stirred the rumor mill, with some suggesting Matheny could be a manager in waiting, which would put Royals manager Ned Yost on notice.

The Cardinals had a 591-474 record and four playoff appearances with Matheny as manager.
"This is a great opportunity to have Mike become a member of our organization," Dayton Moore, the Royals' senior vice president of baseball operations and general manager, said in a statement.
Four months after being fired as manager of the St. Louis Cardinals, Mike Matheny is back at work in the major leagues — on the other side of the state of Missouri.
The team said Matheny would assist in several aspects of baseball operations, including scouting and player development.
